Is New York Fashion Week Dead!? What to Expect this NYFW F/W ’20

We’re just a week away from New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter ’20 and the streets are abuzz with talks of what this season will bring. The design & clothing exhibition, which no longer spans an entire week, will see shows starting later in the day and ending earlier. With Jeremy Scott recently announcing an official move to Paris Fashion Week, and designers like Pyer Moss missing entirely from the NYFW Schedule, the girls are shaking!

Some will argue that NYFW’s “demise” began in 2009 when the shows were moved to Lincoln Center. NYFW then dispersed to various sites in 2015. With the shows spread across the massive city, it became impossible for attendees to make them all. This did however inspire street style visibility & photography. Regardless, the spectacle is no longer what it once was… but is that a bad thing?

What can we expect this season?

With the decline in fashion shows, we’ve seen a rise in brand parties and activations, making for a more social NYFW. Fashion elitists will roll their eyes but this change provides accessibility to the upcoming generations who’ll soon be running the shows, literally.

With all the changes people are shifting their focus elsewhere like Copenhagen FW but New Yorkers have never been one to follow the crowd. I see NYFW’s “death” as a rebirth. We’re wiping the slate clean of the same stale attendees and making room for a new, more diverse class of fashion game changers.

It’s difficult for emerging designers, particularly those of color, to breakthrough in the marginalized industry. The number of designers who can and would put on a stellar show with the right funding and opportunities is endless. So rather than resisting change, let’s support our upcoming peers in fashion and flow with the current of the NEW New York Fashion Week.
